FAQ

Straight answers about our molds. Something not covered? Email us at [email protected] and a real person will answer.

Are your molds food-safe?

Yes — we pour food-grade platinum-cure silicone (the premium, food-safe kind, same family as high-end bakeware), certified BPA free. It’s safe from −40 °F to 450 °F: oven, freezer, chocolate, ice. Wash with warm soapy water before first use. Note: Only use food molds for food. If you cast non-food safe material in them, like epoxy resin, they are no longer safe to cook with.

Will I see 3D-printing layer lines on my castings?

We offer 3 different finishes: standard, smoothed, and precision. Standard does show layer lines 0.16mm high. Smoothed drastically reduces layer lines but does not completely eliminate them, especially on overhangs or complex geometry. Precision is our most expensive option, but almost completely eliminates layer lines anywhere on the mold.

What’s the difference between the Standard, Smooth, and Precision finishes?

Every mold starts from a 3D-printed master, and the finish you choose is a treatment of that master — your silicone is the same food-safe material in all three.

Standard is printed with optimized fine layering: accurate and functional, with a subtle manufacturing texture that may transfer to finished pieces. Right for baked goods, textured or organic designs, and everyday production.

Smooth polishes the master before your mold is poured, substantially reducing visible surface lines. It does not always remove them completely, and extremely fine edges may be slightly softened. Right for mousse and entremets, candles and casting, and smooth geometric shapes. It’s charged once per order — reorders pour from your finished master at no extra charge.

Precision produces the master on our highest-resolution equipment, for the smoothest surface and sharpest fine detail. Right for chocolate and hard candy, glossy finishes, logos and fine lettering, and high-end presentation work.

Choose the finish on any design in the designer’s order panel.

What files can I upload?

.stl 3D models, or a logo/photo as .svg, .png or .jpg (we turn images into a shape for you). 3MF and STEP aren’t supported yet. Files up to 25 MB, parts up to 320 mm (12.6 in) on the longest side. Solid, watertight STL models work best — one closed shape, not a hollow scan or loose shells. Small mesh problems get auto-repaired on upload (the designer tells you when that happens), and the mold check warns you about trapped shapes, heavy overhangs, or paper-thin details before you order. No 3D model yet? Our design team can build one from a sketch or photo — use the design-help link in the designer.

What are the stencils made of, and how big can they be?

Stencils are laser-cut from 1.5 mm cast acrylic. They’re room-temperature only (dust, don’t bake) and hand-wash, not dishwasher or oven safe. Pick one of our latte, cake or tray presets, or set a custom size from 20 mm up to 400 mm (about 15.75 in) per side.

Why wasn’t my card charged right after checkout?

Because a real person reviews every mold before we take your money. At checkout your card is authorized, not charged. If your design will pour correctly, we process payment and start making it. If it won’t, we release the hold — you pay nothing — and we email you an explanation with an offer from our design team to fix the model. No robot ever charges you for a mold that won’t work.

How long until my mold arrives?

About a week from approval: we print your tooling, pour and cure the silicone in-house in Pittsburgh, and ship. You’ll get an email at each step.

Why are reorders cheaper?

Your first price includes making the tooling. We keep that tooling on file, so a reorder skips the setup — you pay just the pour. Sign in and open My molds for one-click reorders, or scan the card that shipped with your mold.

What happens to my design file?

It’s used to make your mold, nothing else — we don’t resell or reuse customer designs. Quoted-but-not-ordered designs are kept for 30 days so you can pick up where you left off, then deleted. Ordered designs stay on file so your reorders are cheap and identical.

Dishwasher? Oven? Microwave?

Silicone molds: hand-wash or top-rack dishwasher, oven and freezer safe within −40–450 °F, and microwave-tolerant (the mold — mind what you put in it). Never use knives or sharp tools in a cavity; flex the mold and the cast pops free. Vacuum-formed trays (rigid PETG plastic) are different: cold food contact only, hand-wash, never the oven. The full guide lives at moldkitchen.com/care.

What can I cast in these?

Chocolate, fondant, gummies, hard candy (within temp limits), ice, baked goods, butter, cheese — and on the craft side: soap, candles, plaster, concrete, and resin. See our tutorials for technique guides, and remember the one-lane rule: food molds stay food molds.
